YOUTH ICON: The Teenager Who Taught NASA a New Trick
What were you doing at 17? For Matteo Paz, a senior at Pasadena High School, the answer was "mapping the invisible."
While the rest of the world was catching up on the latest trends, Matteo was building a digital detective named VARnet—an AI model that would go on to find 1.5 million celestial objects that NASA’s best experts hadn't even noticed.
Today, he stands as the $250,000 top winner of the 2025 Regeneron Science Talent Search, but his journey is about much more than a paycheck. It’s a blueprint for our generation.
The "Lazy" Genius of Automation
They say the best inventions come from people who hate tedious work. When Matteo joined Caltech’s Planet Finder Academy, his mentor suggested he look at a "small piece" of the sky.
Matteo looked at the 200 billion records NASA had collected over a decade and thought: “There has to be a faster way.”
Instead of doing the manual labor, he used his "superpower"—math and code. He combined advanced calculus (which he finished in 8th grade!) with machine learning to create an AI that could "hear" the heartbeat of stars in the middle of static noise. In just six weeks, he did what would have taken a team of humans several lifetimes.
More Than Just a "Space Nerd"
What makes Matteo a true Youth Icon is that he doesn’t live in a bubble. He is the definition of "Multipotentialite":
- ๐ธ Music Mogul: He runs a concert promotion business called "Elbows," deeply connected to the LA music scene.
- ๐ฐ Financial Mentor: He founded "Money Matters," a program where he visits middle schools to teach kids about financial literacy.
- ๐งช Leader: He’s the President of his school's Research Club, helping other students find their own "sparks."
The "Matteo Paz" Lesson for Us
When asked for advice for other ambitious youth, Matteo’s message was simple: "Just start it."
He didn't have a PhD. He didn't have his own observatory. He had a laptop, a public dataset, and the courage to ask "What if?"
Today, the James Webb Space Telescope is using his map to explore the heavens. He proved that you don't need to wait for a degree to be a trailblazer. You just need to find a problem that is "too big" and build a tool to solve it.
๐ Fascinating Fact for your Sidebar:
The "Sole Author" Shockwave: Matteo published his research in The Astronomical Journal as a sole author. In the world of high-level science, this is like a high schooler writing, directing, and starring in an Oscar-winning movie all by themselves.
